I designed this custom bench to fit our space and needs. I chose them based on strength, durability, look, and because I thought the scale would work best for the size of this piece.
Corral boards are used for building fences and barn stalls. We buy them from a local lumber supply yard. They are a great price too. You would need to figure out how to get these super long boards home. We actually use these to build the fences around our yard.
It adds a bit more style to the piece and works well with the geometric cutouts on the bench back. If you look at the pictures, you can see where I set that middle post in the back. I started with the back of the bench. I needed to span those 2 windows so that the bench looked like it fit that spot. If I had made this depth much bigger, it would have been too deep for most people to sit comfortably while leaning against the back of the bench.
So, be careful when designing your bench. This bench is mostly constructed with corral boards 1x6 and 4x4's. Follow the link for full build steps. I started by constructing the frame with my Kreg Jig R3.
At the front posts, the arms are attached with wood glue and my brad nailer. The seat boards were dry fitted to ensure a perfect fit.

The back is attached to another board that was screwed into the posts. A rabbet was made on the shelf that runs along the bench back. The rabbet allows the bench back and it's shelf to support each other across the 8' long width. The back is made of 7 boards of varying lengths with geometric cutouts to add style. The boards are connected by pocket holes. The finished bench is extra durable for our muddy little boys that like to stand on the furniture, but still stylish.Building Workbenches for the Garage

An L-shaped bench works well with many decks because it fits into the corner of one side of the deck and allows for maximum efficiency of space. Although the types of corner benches you can create vary dramatically in style, the basic principles can be broken down into the general framing and covering of a simple L-shaped box. Build the frame out of two-by-fours. Choose how far out from the corners you want the two sides of the L-shaped bench to extend.
Measure that length and mark your two-by-fours accordingly. Cut down four pieces for each side of the L.
75 Ultimate DIY Outdoor Bench Plans
For example, if your L is longer on one section, cut those four pieces the same length, then two-by-fours for the other section of the L at their own length. Build two separate "box" sections -- one for the long section of the L, and another for the shorter leg of the L. Determine how many vertical supports you need, as well as the height you want the bench to be. You should have two vertical supports at least every 16 to 24 inches apart, one for the front and one for the back of the frame.
So if you have a 3-foot-long bench section, for example, you need four pieces for the corners, and then two support sections in between, each with two pieces cut to length for the front and back of the frame. Determine how deep you want the bench to be how far the bench sticks out from the wall of the deck.
Each L-section needs four pieces for the ends of the bench top and bottom sections to box in the front and back lengths as well as two horizontal support pieces every 16 to 24 inches for the top and bottom of the frame.
For best results, match these with your vertical supports. Cut the pieces down to fit with the chop saw. Slide a piece into the saw until the blade aligns with your pencil mark. Put on your safety gear. Hold the wood stable with your off hand and pull the blade down into the wood with your main hand while pulling the trigger of the saw.
Assemble the frame. Set the front and back bottom pieces down first, then attach the end bench segments to create a box. Repeat the process for the upper section. Build each frame of the L, then connect the two sections. Add your horizontal supports to the top and bottom boxes of the bench. Mount the vertical supports to the bottom section of the bench, lining up with the horizontal supports and also attaching to them as well. Flip the whole thing over and slot the unattached ends of the vertical supports into the preassembled top section of the frame, then screw them in place.
Determine the type of planking you want to use to cover the wooden frame of the bench. Opt to run the planking lengthwise down the bench from side to side, or run the planking crosswise. Cut the pieces down to fit with your chop saw. Install the planks on top of your two-by-four frame. Sand the edges down with a palm sander and an grit pad. Use a higher grit if you want to polish the wood.Free Woodworking Plans - Workbenches.
